PART-TIME FAMILY SUPPORT WORKER

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Project aims to promote and improve Traveller health through the
development and delivery of key health messages to the community and
the expansion of the Health Services understanding of the Traveller
culture and health contexts.

FAMILY SUPPORT WORKER:

The overall role of the Family Support Worker is to actively work with
families in Tipperary Town, Cahir, Cashel and surrounding areas. The
key areas of the work will involve Discrimination and Oppression,
Mental health and anxiety issues, alcohol and drug misuse. Other
challenges are Literacy and low levels of engagement with mainstream
services, with limited access to education and training opportunities.
The overall issue is Accommodation which is a major issue within the
Traveller community. Regular one to one on site meetings are part of
the Outreach work where each family’s need are assessed and
documented for consultation with the Local Authority and other
services. The Family Support Worker will then advocate on behalf of
teach family using the needs identified in the assessment process.

The Family Support worker will be based in Tipperary Town and be
expected to outreach to Travellers in the catchment area of the
Project - South Tipperary

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST INCLUDE:

* Third level qualification in the field of healthcare / health
promotion / family supports / community development / adult education
or equivalent.
* Experience of working in a Community Development Organisation /
Health Promotion / Family Support Services or equivalent.
* An excellent understanding of the issues affecting the Traveller
community.
* Have an understanding of the principles of health promotion.
* Experience of working with the Traveller community or groups
experiencing similar issues.
* Experience of line managing, motivating and providing leadership
to staff
* Experience of working in a professional manner and best practice
in regard to record keeping, data protection, confidentiality,
Children First.
* Experience of working with groups to address health issues within
communities
* Experience of delivering training and education to groups within a
community development context.
* Professional approach to work
* Experience of networking at a local regional and national level
with voluntary community and statutory agencies
* Excellent facilitation and communication skills.
* Excellent report writing and evaluation skills
* Excellent computer skills to include Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
* Experience in fund raising and funding applications
* Full clean driving licence.

AS THE FAMILY SUPPORT WORKER YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO:

* Actively outreach to Travellers already engaged in the work of the
Project and extend to those to those more marginalised and distant
from the project.
* Develop the capacity of local Travellers to engage more
effectively with statutory agencies regarding health and issues that
pertain to health
* Work with the National Guidelines Children First to underpin your
work
* Carry out some advocacy work with the local Traveller community.
* Create meaningful linkage between the Traveller Community and
local health services
* Contribute to increased capacity within services to understand the
context of issues facing the Traveller Community.
* Liaise with local regional and national community voluntary and
statutory agencies on a variety of issues and projects
* Source funding as necessary.
* Develop, review and evaluate identified programmes within the
Project.
* Provide regular progress reports to the Management of the Project.
* Attend regular staff meetings
* Carry out any other duties as identified by the Project
Co-ordinator.
* Report to Project Co-ordinator.
* Report on Key Performance Indicators
* Any other work as directed by Co-ordinator of Tipperary Rural
Travellers’ Project Ltd.

This post is a part-time ( * hours per week) and
is subject to funding.
